Construction has commenced on Ørsted’s (CPH:ORSTED) 924-MW Sunrise Wind offshore wind project off the coast of New York, set to create the largest turbine complex in the northeastern US state.

The wind park will be located within a federal lease area some 30 miles (48.2 km) east of Montauk, New York, and is planned to go online in 2026, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on Wednesday.

The state’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm will be capable of powering almost 600,000 homes per year. It has an approved transmission route connected to New York’s electricity grid at the Holbrook Substation in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County.

Developed by Ørsted, Sunrise Wind was previously owned by the Danish clean energy company and New England utility Eversource Energy. Ørsted became the project’s sole owner earlier this month, following an agreement in January and success in the fourth New York offshore wind solicitation.

In June, Sunrise Wind finalised its 25-year offshore wind renewable energy certificate (OREC) contract with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

During the construction phase, the offshore project will open more than 800 jobs.
