US amusement park company Six Flags Entertainment Corp (NYSE:SIX) announced the start of construction works on a 12.37-MW solar carport, coupled with an energy storage system, at its theme park in Los Angeles.

Six Flags announced its intention to build the facility in April. Situated at the Six Flags Magic Mountain park, the solar project is being executed in partnership with Solar Optimum and DSD Renewables.

The solar carport, which will span 637,000 square feet (59,179 sq m), will cover 100% of the park’s energy demand. It is expected to produce 20.8 million kWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power 2,874 homes.

In addition to the solar power generating capacity, there will be a 1.958 MW/7.886 MWh battery storage system. The project also envisages the deployment of around 30 electric vehicle (EV) charging spaces in the guest parking lot.

This is Six Flags’ third solar installation. Upon its completion, the company’s onsite solar systems will have a total combined capacity of 42.37 MW.

The news about the start of installation came shortly before the Thursday announcement that Six Flags has agreed to be acquired by peer Cedar Fair Entertainment Co for about USD 1.88 billion (EUR 1.76bn).
