Construction of 2.35 MW of PV launched under UAE-Caribbean renewables fund

Construction has been launched on 2.35 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in the Bahamas, Barbados and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, it was announced on Tuesday.

The projects are part of the USD-50-million (EUR 43.8m) United Arab Emirates-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF) that was set up in January to support renewable energy projects in the Caribbean over the next three years. Those are the first three projects from the entire portfolio, covering 16 countries, that enter construction, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC) said in a press release.

The three solar projects include a 900-kW carport PV array with an electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the national stadium in the Bahamas, a 350-MW solar carport, also with an EV station, and a 500-kW ground-mounted PV facility in Barbados. The third scheme envisages the construction of 600-kW solar plant in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, to be connected to a 500-kW battery storage facility, covering the entire island’s power demand during the daytime.

The plants, designed by Masdar and the respective national governments, are planned to be switched on by the first quarter of 2019.

UAE-CREF is being fully financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). The initiative is a partnership between MOFAIC, ADFD and renewables developer Masdar.
