Construction of Jindal's green steel plant in Oman to begin in Oct

Oman's largest steel manufacturer Jindal Shadeed Group is advancing the plan for a large-scale green steel plant in the sultanate with construction works in the Duqm area set to start in October.

The facility, to be powered entirely by renewable energy and green hydrogen, is planned to have the capacity to produce some 6 million tonnes of steel annually. It is scheduled to begin operation in 2026.

The project will be carried out by Jindal Shadeed Iron & Steel and Jindal Steel Group's Vulcan Green Steel arm in the Special Economic ­­Zone in Duqm, central Oman. It will cost more than OMR 1.3 billion (USD 3.37bn/EUR 3.11bn).

The ambitious initiative was unveiled in December 2022.

The port of Duqm is a strategic location in Oman that is set to play a vital role in the country's green hydrogen plans. The area will host multiple large-scale green hydrogen projects, with a substantial investment of USD 30 billion (EUR 27.6bn) already secured through five agreements with both local and international developers in the initial phase of the green hydrogen tender.
