Energy company Energie Steiermark is set to launch the construction of a 102-MW wind farm in the Austrian federal state of Styria.

The Graz-based company said on Monday that it has received the green light from the Federal Administrative Court after a five-year regulatory procedure to expand the Freilaenderalm wind park by erecting 17 additional turbines.

The project is worth over EUR 150 million (USD 158m), the firm said.

Energie Steiermark will begin construction immediately. The first turbines will be operational in 2025 and the entire project will be completed in 2026. The 17 wind turbines are expected to produce over 200 GW/h of electricity annually, which is sufficient to meet the needs of 55,000 households.

The new machines come in addition to four turbines which Energie Steiermark put into operation in Freilaenderalm already in 2014.

The project is in line with the Austrian company’s strategy to massively expand the production of renewable energy, including wind power, hydropower, photovoltaics, and biomass. Overall, the firm plans to invest over EUR 2.5 billion in the coming years, with more than EUR 1.5 billion to be spent on network expansion and over EUR 400 million for building wind power capacity.
