The foundation stone for a 220-MW solar photovoltaic park in Algeria's northern province of Biskra has been recently laid, as part of the country's 3 GW solar project awards.

The solar plant will be located in the municipality of Lagros, on an area of 400 hectares (988.4 acres), the energy ministry said last week.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by energy minister Mohamed Arkab.

Comprising more than 330,000 PV panels, the solar plant is set to be completed within 16 months. This facility will enhance the power grid in the area and generate 600 jobs during construction, along with an additional 10 jobs for operational purposes.

In March, Algeria signed contracts to allocate 3,000 MW of solar capacity to the companies that emerged as winners in two tenders. At the end of March, ground was broken on another project within the two schemes: a 200-MW solar park located in the municipality of Tindela, situated in the province of El M'Ghair.
