A Puerto Rico-based subsidiary of Convergent Energy + Power has signed a power purchase and operating agreement with the local electric utility in relation to a 100-MW solar-plus-storage project in the south-central region of the island.

Specifically, Convergent Coamo will own and operate a facility in the town of Coamo comprising the solar park hooked to a 55-MW battery storage plant. The system is expected to become operational in 2024.

The project was awarded in the first tranche of Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority's (PREPA) multi-tranche plan to modernise Puerto Rico's grid.

The island has set an objective to achieve a renewable energy share of 40% by 2025 and 100% by 2050, relying on solar and wind.
