Nordic-Baltic TSOs conclude pre-feasibility study for hydrogen corridor
Sep 09, 2024 10:43 CESTEstonian renewables developer Evecon has teamed up with France’s Corsica Sole to install two battery energy storage systems totalling 200 MW/400 MWh in Estonia in an effort to support the Baltic country’s decoupling from the Russian power grid.
To be built in the Harju County of northern Estonia, the facilities should become operational by 2025, the partners said on Monday. Their planned commissioning is scheduled for the year in which Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania will disconnect from the Russian electricity grid and synchronise their networks with the European one.
The energy storage facilities will be built through the Baltic Storage Platform, a joint venture in which Evecon will have a 20% stake and Corsica Sole be the controlling owner with 80%.
The new batteries Arukula and Kiisa, of 100 MW each, will be able to discharge electricity for around 90,000 homes, helping manage grid fluctuations and providing “an adequate emergency reserve,” the developers said. They will be up and running in the second and third quarters of 2025, respectively.
Geotechnical studies for the project were conducted by Pinnaseuuringud OU.
