Costa Rica seeks to gain offshore wind knowledge

The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) said on Wednesday that it is working together with Costa Rican energy agencies to establish a route for offshore wind development in the Central American country.

The trade association is implementing this joint initiative with the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Environmental Quality of Costa Rica (MINAE) and the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE). The goal is to build knowledge about the local benefits of offshore wind.

The initiative takes the form of a closed-door workshop being held on September 1 and September 2, with participants from the public and private sectors and key stakeholders in Costa Rica.

According to the announcement from GWEC, Costa Rica has 14 GW of total offshore wind technical potential, including 13 GW of floating wind.

“Identifying and determining the energy potential available to the country is an ongoing task that aims to expand the portfolio of renewable energy projects. Following this direction and understanding the role that offshore wind energy could have in their different forms, ICE collaborates with academia, non-governmental organizations, and private industries to promote the development of research and training initiatives that assess the marine energies potential in the country,” commented Kenneth Lobo, Director of Planning and Sustainability at ICE.
