Costa Rica's ICE contracts 166 MW of solar, wind from private sector
Sep 10, 2024 16:44 CESTCosta Rica obtained 99.99% of its electricity from renewable sources in May, according to the country’s power utility Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE).
During the month, power generators in the national electric system produced 984.19 GWh, a historical record for the Central American country, the ICE said last week. Five renewable sources were responsible for the production of 984.02 GWh.
The previous production record was achieved in October 2017 with 976.84 GWh registered in the midst of a rainy season. The May production levels occurred as the dry season ended making way for rain events.
Details on Costa Rica’s power mix in May can be viewed in the table below:
Source | Share in % |
Hydropower | 80.4 |
Geothermal | 12.9 |

The ICE said it had started exporting electricity since May 11 after suspending imports in the first week of the month.
