Court rules in favour of CWP Global's EUR-614m wind project in Bulgaria

Dobrotich Wind, a project company of renewables developer CWP Global which is seeking to build a BGN-1.2-billion (USD 635m/EUR 614m) onshore wind farm in Bulgaria, has won a court ruling against a moratorium by local authorities on wind turbines.

The company proposes to build a wind park consisting of 74 turbines of up to 8 MW each, or an overall capacity of up to 592 MW, in the municipalities of Vetrino and Valchi Dol in the region of Varna, northeastern Bulgaria.

Vetrino municipality in July 2022 banned the erection of wind turbines on its territory. The Varna administrative court has found this decision to be void as it contradicts state policy on renewable energy, according to a press release on Wednesday by the project company. The ruling can be appealed.

The developer says that the project will create a BGN-15-million social programme in the two host municipalities. In September, it offered to cover part of the energy bills -- 1,200 kWh per year but up to BGN 500 -- of residential consumers in the two municipalities. This would benefit about 14,000 people.

CWP Global operates in Southeast Europe and in Australia.
