COWI to be owner’s engineer for Equinor 's 800-MW Firefly project in S Korea

Equinor ASA (NYSE:EQNR) has selected Denmark-based engineering consultancy COWI to serve as owner’s engineer for its 800-MW Firefly floating offshore wind project in South Korea.

The Norwegian energy group said on Wednesday that COWI’s personnel will be integrated into its own project development team so as to provide management and technical follow-up services. Apart from personnel supply, COWI will also work on independent studies and reviews and will conduct other engineering services.

The contract will last for the duration of the Firefly project, Equinor said.

The Firefly wind farm will be located some 70 km (73.5 miles) off the coast of Ulsan within two 75-sq km (29-sq m) areas. The machines will be mounted on a low draft semi-submersible floating concept called Wind Semi. First power from the complex is expected to be produced in 2027.

Equinor has been present in the South Korean market since 2014. Currently, it has in place an electric business license (EBL) to generate and supply electricity from the Firefly and the 200-MW Donghae 1 floating wind projects, while it is also pursuing more early-phase developments in the country, it said. The Norwegian group is supposedly looking to build an up to 6-GW portfolio of offshore wind farms in South Korea.
