Danish engineering consultancy COWI said on Tuesday that it has been hired to oversee the detailed design phase of the onshore cable installation for the Norfolk Boreas offshore wind project of the coast of the UK.

The contract was awarded by Swedish utility group Vattenfall AB, which is seeking to install up to 3.6 GW at the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone, located some 47 kilometres (29.2 miles) off the Norfolk coast. Norfolk Boreas is the first 1.8-GW phase of the overall development.

The plans for the onshore cable installation were devised by UK engineering and construction company J. Murphy & Sons. These include the installation of 60 kilometres of cables that will connect where the Norfolk Boreas development makes landfall at Happisburgh to the Necton National Grid substation. COWI said its job would entail reviewing the plans.

Thanks to an innovative and coordinated design, the same route can also serve the second phase project, the Norfolk Vanguard wind farm, to save on construction times and reduce disruption and environmental impact, the firm added.

Norfolk Boreas secured development consent at the end of 2021 for a maximum capacity of 1.8 GW. In July 2022, Vattenfall won a contract for difference (CfD) for 1.4 GW of the project’s capacity.
