Croatian meat processing company PPK Karlovacka Mesna Industrija launched a 1.2 MW solar plant to meet its own electricity needs, PPK's owner, local meat producer Braca Pivac, said on Friday.

The total investment in the plant stood at 7.2 million kuna ($1.1 million/955,000 euro), as half of it was covered by agriculture ministry grants, Braca Pivac said in a statement.

The plant will produce 1.2 GWh of electricity per year, meeting some 11% of PPK's annual electricity needs which total 10.7 GWh.

The facility covers an area of 7,500 square metres.

The project was implemented in partnership with HEP ESCO, the energy service unit of state-owned power utility HEP.

Grupa Pivac, part of which are Braca Pivac, PPK and another local meat producer - Vajda, plans to build another solar plant, of 2 MW, at the new processing unit of Braca Pivac, which is under construction in the southern town of Vrgorac.

In addition, the group also plans to build a 1 MW solar plant for the needs of Vajda.

Grupa Pivac employs more than 2,000 people and has a network of 270 retail shops across Croatia.
