Queensland government-owned CS Energy has launched commercial operations at its 100-MW/200-MWh Chinchilla battery energy storage system (BESS) in its home state, its first project within a larger energy hub.

The facility underwent a comprehensive commissioning programme, the company said in a LinkedIn post, adding that its operations will help meet electricity demand in the morning and evening peaks.

The Chinchilla battery was installed as part of CS Energy's Kogan Clean Energy Hub in the Western Downs region of Queensland. The complex is located next to the coal-fired Kogan Creek Power Station and is made up of 80 Tesla Megapack systems. It is expected it will able to discharge electricity to meet the demand of 33,000 homes for two hours in evening peak times, which is seen to help fill the gap in grid power supply and thus lower wholesale price volatility.

CS Energy unveiled the AUD-150-million (USD 99.1m/EUR 90.7m) battery project in March 2022 and completed the building works two years later.
