Cuba's Sancti Spiritus province Electric Company (EE) has started the construction of a 4.4-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant, the first in the country to use pile driving technology.

The new technology comes from China and is expected to simplify the construction process. In contrast to other solar power plants in the country, this one does not require the use of concrete, the Cuban News Agency reported.

The PV park, the second in the province, is in the municipality of Cabaiguan and will cover an area of about 7.1 hectares.

Reinier Hernandez, EE's renewable energy specialist said that civil construction works on the solar park are expected to be completed in approximately a month and a half. It is estimated to generate 6,600 MWh per year, saving more than 1,700 tonnes of fuel for thermal power plants.

EE also stated that Sancti Spiritus province is expected to have 63 MW of solar power by 2019.
