Cuba expects to switch on a 2.2-MW photovoltaic (PV) park by the end of the month, the official newspaper for the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (Granma) announced today.

The Imias plant, as it is named, is located in the municipality of Sierra de Cubitas, Camaguey province. When completed, the PV farm will be the third of its kind in the region, following suit to the government's plan of gradually changing the country's energy mix, Granma said.

In addition to this plant, under the national renewable energy expansion programme, three other similar facilities are expected to enter construction this year. If such investments are made, 11.8 MW of solar power will be delivered to the Cuban grid, according to the specialist in renewable energy sources of Camaguey's Electric Company, Juan Carlos Lacaba Jofre.

Before the end of this year, the government is also planning to bring electricity to 1,926 isolated homes, many of them located in the country side, through small scale solar systems.
