Cuba expects to switch on 59 MW of new photovoltaic (PV) parks by the end of the year, the official newspaper for the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (Granma) announced on Friday.

Тhe Cuban Ministry of Construction has so far started construction of 59 PV parks with 33 of them, scheduled to be up and running this year. These 33 solar parks have a combined capacity of 59 MW, to be connected to the national power system, Granma said.

The government believes these PV plants can lead to significant advances in the use of solar energy, essential for changing the country's energy mix and reducing the dependence on fuel oil.

Currently, 4% of Cuba's electricity comes from renewable sources and the country is targeting to reach a 24% share by 2030.
