US floating solar developer D3Energy said on Thursday it is partnering with Del-Co Water to deliver the first floating solar project in Ohio.

Del-Co Water is a cooperative water utility serving eight counties in central Ohio. The project, which also involves rooftop and carport installations, will offset almost 50% of Del-Co Water's electricity consumption at its water plant. Construction is due to start next month, with full grid connection planned for late spring 2024.

"Floating solar enabled us to move forward with a substantial solar installation without encumbering any of our valuable ground which may be needed for future expansion,” explained Del-Co Water chief executive Glenn Marzluf. “We were also pleased with the possibility of reduced growth of algae related to sunlight reduction," added Glenn.

The floating array will use the Hydrelio floating system of manufacturer Ciel & Terre.

D3Energy will own and operate the project in partnership with solar investor Gardner Capital.
