DB Schenker, the logistics division of German rail operator Deutsche Bahn AG, earlier this week officially opened a logistics centre in Dubai that is fully powered by solar panels.

The new centre, DLC II, which covers an area of 33,000 sq m (355,209 sq ft), will become the company's central regional logistics hub in the Middle East.

The construction of the new logistics centre is part of DB Schenker's Eco warehouses initiative. The company has green warehouses in Singapore, Helsinki, Klagenfurt, Tilburg and Dortmund.

"The DLC II clearly demonstrates: We plan and act sustainably. This makes us one of the world's leading logistics providers. We use resources in an ecologically sensible way in order to reduce CO2 emissions and costs," Xavier Garijo, member of the board for contract logistics at DB Schenker, said.
