Decision to exempt German own power users from surcharge is right - VEA

Apr 8, 2014 - A German association has praised Germany's decision to leave owners of renewable energy plants who use their own electricity exempt from the renewable surcharge.

"This is an important step in the right direction", Volker Stuke, head of the German association of energy consumers (VEA), said.

Ever more German companies are generating their own electricity to sidestep growing prices as Germany is turning its back on fossil fuels and shifts to green power.

According to the German Chamber of Commerce (DIHK), around 16% of German firms were generating their own electricity last year.

German consumers pay a surcharge on their bills to spur Germany's transition to renewable sources of energy.
