Norway-based developer Deep Wind Offshore AS has won the right to build a 1.56-GW offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea in a recent auction in Estonia.

The award is the Saare 2.1. site which spans 163.8 square kilometres with a water depth of between 29 and 66 metres. Situated off Saaremaa Island, the area is slated to accommodate as many as 98 turbines of up to 1,560 MW in total, according to the company's building permit application.

Deep Wind Offshore submitted the sole winning bid which stood at EUR 2.46 million (USD 2.63m), matching the tender price. The auction started on June 18 and concluded on June 20.

“Deep Wind Offshore will contribute to the country reaching its climate goals, providing energy security, building value chains, and creating new jobs,” CEO Knut Vassbotn noted in a press statement on Thursday.

The news follows an announcement in April by Estonia’s Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority (CPTRA) that it has received 10 applications from four different bidders to take part in auctions for the right to build new offshore wind capacities in three areas.

The auction for the second site, dubbed Saare 2.2, is set to take place from June 26 until June 28.
