Demag Cranes to equip UK wind farm with rope hoists

(SeeNews) – Aug 24, 2011 - German building machinery maker Demag Cranes (ETR:D9C) has received an order from UK Granada Material Handling Ltd for the supply of 164 electric rope hoists for the off-shore wind park Gwynt y Mor, in Wales.

Granada will integrate Demag Cranes' 1.3 tonne SWL FDR-Pro 5 electric rope hoists, especially designed for offshore use, into its Python crane system, which will be mounted on the foundation of the wind turbines and on the two substations of the farm. The Python crane system allows securer and easier offloading of heavy components from water vessels.

Granada was hired to design, supply, certify, deliver, test and put into operation the cranes for the Gwynt y Mor wind farm by RWE Npower Renewables, the UK clean energy unit of German utility RWE.

Gwynt y Mor is situated in the Irish see, 18 km (11.18 miles) off the northern Welsh coast. The wind farm will include 160 wind turbines and two substations and will have an annual generation capacity of about 1,950 GWh, which will suffice for around 400,000 homes in the UK.

The farm is to start operation in 2014.
