Belgian marine contractor DEME Group NV and its consortium partners have been contracted to install the inter-array and export cables for the 1,140-MW Baltic Power offshore wind project in Polish waters.

The deal was awarded to DEME Offshore and cable suppliers NKT and TFKable Group, according to a recent press statement. While the value of the contract was not specified, DEME said its share ranges within EUR 150 million (USD 158m) and EUR 300 million.

The job covers the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of around 130 km of export cables and 127 km of inter-array cables.

To be located about 22 km (13.7 miles) off the Polish coast, Baltic Power will be equipped with 76 Vestas turbines that will generate 4,000 GWh of electricity annually, equal to 3% of Poland’s current electricity output and enough for around 1.5 million homes. It will be built by a partnership between Polish oil refiner PKN Orlen (WSE:PKN) and Canada’s Northland Power Inc (TSE:NPI) and is planned to go online in 2026.

All needed permits for the offshore project are in place and construction is due to begin next year. Final investment decision (FID) was taken last week.
