Denmark launches bidding round for 450 MW offshore wind power

Nov 28, 2012 - The Danish energy ministry announced today a bidding round for up to 450 MW of offshore wind power capacity, to be installed at six sites across the country.

The selected sites are Bornholm, Smalandsfarvandet, Sejero Bugt, Saeby, North Sea south and North Sea north. The turbines must be installed at least 4 km (2.5 miles) from the shore. The new wind farms will come on stream by 2020 and their combined production will be enough to cover the electricity needs of half a million homes.

Local participation in the projects will be encouraged by providing incitement to local companies to join as owners in the projects and allowing citizens to buy stakes of up to 20%.

An additional 50 MW will be reserved for testing new offshore turbines, to be allocated in a separate bidding round. The developers of these projects will receive DKK 0.70 (USD 0.121/EUR 0.094) per kWh.

Increased wind power production is in line with Denmark's strategy to increase the share of renewable energy to 35% in 2020, and to have 50% of its electricity consumption covered by wind energy in 2020.
