Danish pension scheme manager Sampension and energy firm NRGi have taken the final investment decision (FID) for a large-scale solar project set in Denmark's Djursland peninsula, aiming to plough hundreds of millions of krone into its construction.

Sampension on Monday said the partners are investing an amount in “the high three-digit millions” through their joint company NRGi Renewables. The funds will go towards building a “large” solar farm, capable of producing 132,000 MWh of electricity per year.

The plant will cover approximately 122 hectares (301.5 acres) of land between the towns of Kolind and Nodager in Syddjurs Municipality. The Municipality approved the plan for the project at the end of March.

The FID was based on commitments from several companies to procure part of the new solar farm’s output, Sampension said.

The partners expect to break ground on the project in August. The solar farm is scheduled to commence operation in the spring of 2025.

"It is a major focus area for Sampension to actively participate in the development of new sustainable energy and thus contribute positively to the green transition," commented Torbjorn Lange, Head of Property and Infrastructure at Sampension. "We are also very pleased with our collaboration with the NRGi Group on NRGi Renewables, and we see great future potential to implement further projects together for the benefit of both increased sustainability and our pensioners' returns".
