German railway company Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to procure 88 GWh of green power annually from energy group Uniper SE (ETR:UN01).

The five-year contract calls for Uniper to supply the railway operator with electricity from its run-of-river hydropower plants (HPPs). Power deliveries are due to begin in 2028, Uniper said on Wednesday.

The electricity will be sourced from Uniper’s Swedish HPPs, Borgforsen, Bodum, Fjallsjo, Sil, along the Fjallsjoalven river.

The power offtake deal supports Deutsche Bahn’s goal to become climate-neutral by 2040 and use exclusively renewable energy from 2038. The railway group is already sourcing green power from Uniper under the companies’ long-term partnership.

At end-2023, Deutsche Bahn agreed to buy 160 GWh of solar power from Germany's MVV Energie under a four-year deal that came into force this January. Its procurement arrangements also include the delivery of about 175 million kWh of wind power from German wind farm operator Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co KG (TWB) and 20 MW from the He Dreiht offshore wind project in the North Sea.
