German wind farm operator Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co KG (TWB) has reached a deal to deliver about 175 million kWh of wind power to Deutsche Bahn AG in two initial tranches.

The power will be supplied from the offshore wind farm Trianel Windpark Borkum I, located about 45 km from the German North Sea island Borkum, the operator said on Tuesday. The power purchase agreement (PPA) with the railway company concerns 50 MW of the wind park's capacity.

"With the contract now concluded with TWB I, we will save up to 130,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in the future and move a step closer to our goal of climate neutrality," Torsten Schein, head of Deutsche Bahn’s energy unit DB Energie GmbH, noted in the statement.

As part of its strategy, Deutsche Bahn aims to become climate-neutral by 2040 and plans to use exclusively renewable energy from 2038. Currently, the share of green energy in its power mix is over 65%.

Trianel Windpark Borkum I has a total capacity of 200 MW. Since its commissioning in 2015, the wind farm has produced around 5.31 billion kWh of electricity, saving over 2.37 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, according to the statement.
