Railway operator Deutsche Bahn AG has entered into a two-year deal to offtake about 18,000 MWh annually from a solar park in northern Germany, according to a statement published on Monday.

The power purchase agreement (PPA) was reached with Re:cap global investors AG, which manages the solar park on behalf of Luxembourg-based special fund FP Lux Group.

The Kogel-Leizen solar park in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which will produce the contracted electricity, has a capacity of 27.8 MWp and has been operational since 2021. The park is part of the portfolio of the RE Infrastructure Opportunities fund, which has collected EUR 290 million (USD 321.8m) to invest in renewable energy projects. The portfolio already contains 30 projects in seven countries with a total capacity of over 400 MWp.

Currently, 65% of the electricity used by Deutsche Bahn comes from renewable sources. The latest deal will further help reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in the transport sector, Thomas Seibel, CEO of Re:cap, noted in the statement.
