Madrid-based green hydrogen projects developer DH2 Energy has obtained an environmental permit for one such development in Spain, the firm said on Monday, as it announced the permitting milestone for its Hysencia solar-to-hydrogen scheme in the region of Aragon.

The Hysencia project will build a 35-MW electrolysis system and a 49-MWp captive solar photovoltaic plant in the hamlet of Plasencia del Monte. It was one of seven projects to be selected to receive a subsidy in the European Hydrogen Bank’s pilot auction in April 2024.

Hysencia is also one of the few commercial renewable hydrogen projects to obtain the so-called integrated environmental authorisation in Spain and Europe, according to DH2 Energy.

The company expects to begin construction of the Hysencia project in early 2025. Once in operation, the captive solar farm will provide 99 GWh of power per year, while the electrolysis setup will produce 1,700 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which DH2 Energy will supply to he mobility and industrial sectors.

The facilities, spanning 100 hectares (247 acres), will be ideally positioned to supply the transport sector due to their proximity to different land communication axes, including the Huesca-Canfranc railway line in the Aragon region. Last year, this line was used to test one of the first hydrogen pilot trains in Spain, DH2 Energy said.
