Madrid-based solar developer-operator Dhamma Energy said on Tuesday that it has over 2 GW of solar photovoltaic and more than 5 GW of green hydrogen projects in development in Mexico.

The company’s unit DH2 Energy is in charge of the hydrogen development.

According to Dhamma Energy, its solar projects are all utility-scale and in advanced stages of development. They are located in different regions of Mexico, primarily in the industrial areas in the central part of the country.

DH2 Energy is dedicated to the development of large-scale green hydrogen hubs in Mexico, which the company expects to realise in the medium term.

Since setting up an office in Mexico City in 2013, Dhamma Energy has developed and put into operation 470 MW of solar farms across the country, it says.

Olivier Crambade, co-founder of Dhamma Energy and DH2 Energy, emphasised Mexico’s favourable location for the green hydrogen sector due to its richness in renewable energy resources and its port and cross-border infrastructure, but also “because it is one of the main beneficiaries of the current nearshoring process, which has a knock-on effect on sustainable energy investments for the industry”.

Dhamma Energy sold its solar business in Spain and France to Italian oil-and-gas major Eni SpA (BIT:ENI) in 2021. At the time, it said it wanted to pursue activities in other markets, such as Mexico, and focus on the green hydrogen business.
