Dutch battery developer Dispatch and partners have unveiled a plan to build a 45-MW/90-MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) at home, which it describes as the largest stand-alone facility of this type in the Netherlands.

The technology will be provided by Fluence Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FLNC), while Equans Netherlands will be in charge of the engineering and construction work. Dutch utility group Eneco, in turn, will be optimising the BESS across various power markets.

The battery, which will be capable of storing enough power to meet the daily needs of 21,500 homes, will be located in the port area of the city of Dordrecht. Spanning 6,000 square metres (64,583 sq ft), it will be equipped with 144 Fluence cubes.

Construction works are scheduled to start in the coming months. The project is supported by infrastructure fund EPICo², Macquarie Capital and lender ABN Amro.

The Dordrecht BESS marks the first project as part of a strategic alliance between Dispatch and Macquarie Capital that will seek to deploy up to 3 GWh of BESS across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany over the next seven years.
