The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Mines and Energy has inked three power purchase and sale agreements for 128 MW of solar and biomass projects, the government announced on Wednesday.

The contracts are tied to two solar parks, with a combined capacity of 93 MW, and one biomass-based scheme of 35 MW. Together, the power plants represent an investment of USD 197 million (EUR 179.2m).

More details on the awarded projects are available in the table below.

Owner Type Capacity Investment
Parque Energy Solar del Este Cabreto l Urbasolar Solar 50 MW USD 37 million
Parque Solar Martí Tropigas Solar 43 MW USD 40.13 million
Planta de Congelacion de Biomasa San Pedro BioEnergy Biomass 35 MW USD 120 million

Energy and mining minister Antonio Almonte noted that turning to renewable energy would help the Dominican Republic address the global fuel crisis, which he said is a significant threat from an economic and eventually social point of view. The country is too reliant on energy imports.
