The national energy commission (CNE) of the Dominican Republic this week granted a definitive concession for a 83.4-MW/101.6-MWp solar project with storage, while the nation’s Vice President, Raquel Pena, led the inauguration of a 58.48-MW/64.70-MWp solar farm.

The CNE on Monday granted its seal of approval to the proposed Ardavin Solar plant, which concessionaire Ardavin Solar SRL will build in the Gaspar Hernandez municipality. The project will include the installation of an energy storage system of 27.5 MW/110 MWh, the commission said.

A day earlier, Vice President Pena opened the La Victoria solar farm, which companies BAS Corporation and Dominion installed in the Santo Domingo Norte municipality. This project represented an investment of USD 82 million (EUR 76.5m).

The news of solar energy advancements in the Dominican Republic comes as the CNE revealed that the country electricity sector exceeded 80 GWh of daily demand, reaching a historical record. Approximately 16% of the electricity consumed in the country comes from clean sources.

The installed renewable energy capacity in the Dominican Republic rose to 1,126.25 MW at the end of 2023 from 555.5 MW in 2020. There are currently over 1,300 MW of solar photovoltaic projects under construction in various parts of the country, according to the CNE.
