BOEM awaits enviro review comments for California wind lease sites
Nov 14, 2024 9:55 CESTDominion Energy Inc (NYSE:D) has installed 78 monopile foundations and four offshore substation foundations for the 2.6-GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW), thus completing the first season of the project’s installation campaign.
With the milestone, the US utility has exceeded its initial objective for at least 70 monopiles set into the seabead floor off Virginia Beach. According to its press statement on Friday, CVOW’s construction remains on budget and on schedule to be finalised in late 2026.
CVOW, the largest offshore wind farm currently under construction in the US, will be located 27 miles (43.5km) off the coast of Virginia, with its 176 turbines expected to generate electricity for up to 660,000 homes annually. Around 43% of the project is now complete and the second installation season, when the monopiles will be installed, is due to be launched in May 2025.
In the next few months, work will proceed with the installation of the first offshore substation and export cables, as well as the onshore transmission construction. The preparation for erecting the Siemens Gamesa offshore turbines will begin in 2025.
As of end-October, Dominion co-owns the COVW project with alternative investment firm Stonepeak, which received customary minority rights.
