IEA urges proactive measures to integrate renewables
Sep 18, 2024 11:17 CESTThe construction of Dominion Energy Inc’s (NYSE:D) 2.6-GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) has not been delayed or stayed, the US utility said on Thursday in response to “erroneous news releases.”
The company made an official statement after a lawsuit was filed with the US District Court for the District of Columbia. The goal of the case was to block the start of construction activities, claiming regulators had failed to consider the project’s impact on endangered whales.
Any reports that building works have been put off “are false and grossly misrepresent the facts", Dominion explained, adding that the plaintiffs' petition is without merit. According to the developer, the biological aspects of the project comply with all legal requirements and are expected to prevail against the request for a construction delay.
“CVOW remains on schedule and on budget consistent with previously disclosed timelines and costs,” Dominion said. In line with the initial schedule, the installation of monopiles is due to start between May 6 and May 8.
The 176-turbine CVOW complex will be built in a nearly 113,000-acre (45,730-hectare) lease area off the coast of Virginia Beach. The offshore wind farm is expected to become operational in late 2026 and will be able to deliver electricity to 660,000 homes.
