DTEK closes buy of 133-MW battery project in Poland

DRI, the EU renewables arm of Ukrainian private energy group DTEK, has completed the acquisition of a 133-MW/532-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Poland from local developed Columbus Energy.

The scheme is on track to enter construction later this year and become operational in January 2027, DTEK said.

The four-hour Trzebinia battery in southern Poland’s Chrzanow County will be run under a 17-year contract to provide energy capacity to the Polish market starting from 2027. This obligation was awarded in the 2022 Capacity Market auction held by Polish transmission system operator PSE.

“The storage of renewable energy can help improve grid reliability, optimise energy costs and expand overall renewable production capacity, which is important for Poland to reach its 62 GW installed renewable energy target by 2030,” said DRI’s CEO, John Stuart.

The acquisition, originally agreed in March, is DTEK’s first step in the Polish renewables market and is part of the group’s goal to deploy up to 1 GW of renewable energy and storage capacity in the country by 2030 through DRI.

Currently, DRI has six solar and onshore wind projects under development across Italy, Romania, and Croatia.
