Dubai's Amea to build 50-MW solar park in Togo

A unit of UAE renewables developer Amea Power has signed a deal with the government of Togo to build a 50-MW solar park in the West African country.

The power purchase agreement (PPA) was signed by the Dubai-based group’s subsidiary Amea Togo Solar, the parent company said in a Twitter post on Wednesday. Under the contract, Amea Togo Solar will design, finance, build, commission, operate and maintain the photovoltaic (PV) park in the Blitta prefecture of central Togo.

The output of the power plant will be fed into the national electricity grid and distributed by the Electric Power Company of Togo (CEET).

According to a report by local news service icilome, the project will be implemented in two stages. The first one will involve the installation of 30 MW, to be commissioned late in June 2020, while the second one will add the remaining 20 MW. Its goal is to support Togo’s ambitions to cut its energy dependence and lift the rate of electrification in rural areas to 50% in 2022 from 8% at present.

The Abu Dhabi Development Fund, the West African Development Bank (BOAD), the Togolese government and the private sector will take part in the project’s financing.
