Dutch govt clears IPCEI grants for over 1 GW of green H2 projects

The Dutch government announced on Tuesday that it has approved the grant applications for seven hydrogen projects, totalling 1,150 MW of electrolysis capacity, to share between them EUR 783.5 million (USD 830.4m) in financial support.

These subsidies will be provided as part of the second wave of EU-backed Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) dedicated to hydrogen. The seven selected project companies are Rotterdam Hydrogen Company BV (Shell), H2ermes BV, Air Liquide Industrie BV, HyCC / H2-Fifty BV, Air Liquide Industrie BV, Ørsted Hydrogen Netherlands Holding BV and Engie Energie Nederland NV.

HyCC BV, a joint venture of European essential chemical company Nobian and Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG), has produced two winners in this application process – its 250-MW H2-Fifty green hydrogen project with BP Plc (LON:BP) in Rotterdam and the 100-MW H2ermes project near Amsterdam, the output of which will be used by India’s Tata Steel Ltd (BOM:500470) at its site in IJmuiden.

The Dutch government noted that a budget of EUR 595 million is available for the third wave of IPCEIs, which focuses on storage and import infrastructure. The process to register for that wave was opened last month. Registration for the EUR-199-million Wave 4 of hydrogen projects in mobility and transport will be initiated in 2023.
