The Dutch government on Friday received the green light from the European Commission (EC) for a EUR-246-million (USD 270.9m) scheme to support the production of green hydrogen by adding at least 60 MW of electrolysis capacity.

The Commission said in a statement that the approved measure is necessary and appropriate, has an “incentive effect” and will come with sufficient safeguards to limit its impact on competition and trade within the EU.

In order to provide state aid under the scheme, the Dutch government will hold a competitive bidding process later this year. This tender will be open to all companies established in the European Economic Area (EEA) that operate or plan to build a hydrogen production facility in the Netherlands.

Those who emerge victorious from the tender will get direct grants for a period of seven to 15 years.

The Netherlands aims to have 500 MW of operational electrolysers in 2025 and 3 GW-4 GW by 2030.
