Dutch oil storage firm Vopak in talks to buy Exmar's FSRU unit

Dutch oil storage firm Vopak (AMS:VPK) said it is in exploratory talks with Belgian shipping company Exmar NV (EBR:EXM) to acquire the latter's interests in floating LNG storage and regasification units (FSRUs).

Further details were not disclosed as the outcome of the discussions is still uncertain.

Vopak has earmarked LNG storage and handling as one of its strategic focus areas and is therefore looking for opportunities to strengthen its position in this market.

The oil storage firm jointly owns and operates two land-based storage and regasification terminals, the GATE terminal in the Port of Rotterdam, and the TLA terminal in Altamira, Mexico.

Exmar, active in LNG shipping for over 35 years, is currently co-owner and operator of 10 FSRUs, and has one FSRU and one floating liquefaction facility under construction.
