The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development said it is inviting expressions of interest for consultancy services in developing documents for renewable energy auctions that will be conducted in 2019 and 2020 in Moldova.

The consultancy services will support the Moldovan authorities in further developing the necessary framework for the implementation of a competitive procurement scheme to support renewable energy within the country, the bank said in a press release on Tuesday.

The assignment, which is expected to start next month, has an estimated overall duration of up to 8 months and a cost of 250,000 euro ($289,000)

The relevant Moldovan authorities are committed to reaching a target of at least 10% of total electricity generation from renewable energy sources by 2020, under the National Renewable Energy Action Plan.

This would be a significant increase relative to the 2% share achieved in 2016, the EBRD noted.

Currently, most renewable electricity generation is wind- and hydro-based with the share of solar photovoltaic being negligible. However, there is potential for the grid to readily absorb wind and solar photovoltaic projects with capacity up to 160-180 MW.

Furthermore, the Moldovan authorities have improved the policy and regulatory frameworks to attract investments in renewable energy through several reforms. Being a signatory of the Energy Community Treaty, Moldova is required to transpose EU acquis related to renewable energy support schemes.
