The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will support the construction of 4 MW of biogas combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Belarus with a loan of up to USD 15 million (EUR 12.1m), it announced on Wednesday.

Three special purpose companies owned by Lithuania’s UAB Modus Group will get the financing. They will be responsible for the construction and commissioning of four CHP plants in the Grondo and Brest regions in northwestern and southwestern Belarus.

Once up and running, the cogeneration facilities will be able to produce 32 GWh of electricity per year and will avoid 15,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Technical cooperation funds for the projects were extended by the government of Japan through the EBRD Green Economy Transition (GET) project preparation and implementation framework, the EBRD said.

Such projects help the country to diversify its energy supply mix and promote renewables.
