Portuguese utility EDP (ELI:EDP) announced on Tuesday its 150-MW BigBATT battery project will receive funding from the European Commission's (EC) Innovation Fund.

The battery will be installed next to the Ribatejo combined cycle power station in Portugal.

The new scheme is the first of its kind approved in medium and large-scale applications.

EDP pointed out the importance of storage systems as a way to ensure the energy transition as the storage of renewable energy offers greater flexibility to the electricity system.

Overall, the Portuguese company plans to achieve more than 500 MW of storage capacity worldwide by 2026, it noted.

In addition to BigBATT, EDP had the GreenH2Atlantic and the Asturias H2 Valley projects included in previous editions of this fund.
