Italy has received the go-ahead from the European Commission (EC) to extend EUR 1.1 billion (USD 1.2bn) in state aid to support investments in the production of equipment needed in the pursuit of the energy transition.

This measure will be available to companies that manufacture batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, heat pumps, electrolysers, and carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) equipment, along with key components and related critical raw materials. Each beneficiary will receive a direct grant of up to EUR 150 million but, in certain areas, they could go as high as EUR 350 million.

According to the Commission, the measure is “necessary, appropriate and proportionate” for the purpose of stepping up the green transition.

The state aid will be granted no later than December 31, 2025.
