The European Commission (EC) on Monday presented an action plan involving new technologies, the purpose of which will be to improve the efficient use of energy resources, make it easier to integrate renewables into the grid and save costs.

The EC said in a statement that it intends to take various steps in the coming months and years in a drive to boost digital energy services and, at the same time, ensure an energy-efficient information and communications technology (ICT) sector.

These include providing new digital tools and services to consumers so they can have more control over their energy use and bills, as well as controlling the ICT sector’s energy consumption through an environmental labelling scheme for data centres, an energy label for computers, measures to increase transparency on the energy consumption of telecommunication services and an energy efficiency label for blockchains.

The Commission also plans to bolster the cybersecurity of energy networks by adopting new legislation including a Network Code for cybersecurity aspects of cross-border electricity flows under the EU Electricity Regulation and Council Recommendation.

“The aim is to make our energy system more efficient and ready for increasing share of renewable energy sources. For this, we need more innovative digital solutions and a grid that is much smarter and more interactive than it is today,” commented Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.
