Onshore wave energy technology company Eco Wave Power Global AB (NASDAQ:WAVE) on Wednesday said its EWP-EDF One pilot project in the Port of Jaffa, Israel has started feeding power into the country’s grid.

Construction of the 100-kW project consisting of 10 floaters has been completed recently. The facility was officially connected to the Israeli national electrical grid in August 2023, the company said.

The project was co-funded by EDF Renewable IL, part of France’s EDF Group, which owns a 50% stake, and by the Israeli Ministry of Energy.

The Eco Wave Power engineering team is currently carrying out calibration and testing activities. During initial tests, the installation reached peak energy of around 32.4 kW and stable average energy output of around 10 kW per hour. According to the engineering team, the results are encouraging and a significant increase in production is expected by the end of the testing phase.

The technology recently sustained a storm with waves of up to 3.5 metres, the announcement noted.

Eco Wave Power’s next planned project is in the Port of Los Angeles in the US. The scheme is pending final licences from the port and the Army Corps of Engineers.

Eco Wave Power founder and chief executive Inna Braverman said the US market is very strategic for the company, given that the US Energy Information Administration estimates wave energy can supply up to 66% of all the US energy needs and that in October 2023 California enacted a law that directs the California Energy Commission to evaluate the feasibility of wave and tidal energy in the state.
