Ecuador’s ministry of energy and mining on Wednesday presented the green hydrogen roadmap and strategy, seeking to take advantage of the renewable energy resources to promote domestic hydrogen production and uptake and eventually become an exporter.

The roadmap followed a study carried out by German consulting firm Fichtner and financed with a non-refundable contribution in the amount of USD 95,000 (EUR 84,946) from the Inter-American Development Bank, the ministry said in a press release.

Ecuador intends to apply a just energy transition approach to the green hydrogen development, according to the ministry, which did not publish the document with the strategy. Per the press release, the hydrogen roll-out will be conducted in three phases -- an initial phase until 2025, a medium-term phase until 2030 and the third phase beyond 2030.

Each of these phases will address issues based on research, development and innovation, policy and regulation, infrastructure and international cooperation, the energy authority said.
