EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) have begun construction work on the 500-MW Manah I solar power project in northern Oman.

The solar park will be built on an area spanning 7.8 square kilometres in the northern Ad Dakhiliyah governorate about 170 km (105.6 mi) southwest of the capital Muscat, EDF Renewables Middle East has announced.

When operational, Manah I is expected to generate power enough to supply 50,000 households and offset 780,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The solar farm should be connected to the grid by March 2025, according to an earlier statement.

KOWEPO and EDF won the contract to build Manah I in March.

The project is one of two schemes totalling 1 GW that Oman's sole off-taker of electricity from independent power plants, Nama Power and Water Procurement Co (PWP), awarded earlier this year. Manah II, also of 500 MW, went to a joint venture of Sembcorp Industries and Jinko Power Technology.
