EDF Renewables today announced the acquisition of an offshore wind project in South Korea from oil giant Shell plc (LON:SHEL).

The subsidiary of France’s EDF Group has acquired the entire holding of Shell Overseas Holdings Ltd in West Sea Energy 1 Co Ltd, which is studying the development of an up-to-1.5-GW offshore wind project in South Korea’s Yeonggwang Province.

EDF Renewables said it will continue to develop the project, with the next step being the securing of the Electricity Business License, expected in 2025.

This is EDF Renewables’s first offshore wind project in South Korea. The move aligns with the company’s strategy to increase its presence in offshore wind in the Asia-Pacific region and South Korea in particular.

Earlier this year, Shell offloaded its holding in the joint venture that develops the 1,125-MW MunmuBaram floating wind project off South Korea to its Swedish partner Hexicon AB.

EDF Renewables, meanwhile, is partnering with Shell in the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, LLC joint venture in the US.
